Jana Nayagan Release Delay: The film Jana Nayagan which features Thalapathy Vijay has brought forth an unexpected scandal that is currently shaking the entire filmmaking industry. The film which was originally scheduled to be the major theatrical attraction of Pongal 2026 now faces financial losses of approximately ₹100 crore because it had to delay its release from Pongal to January 2026 after facing censorship and legal challenges.

The movie Jana Nayagan directed by H. Vinoth features Vijay and Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju in lead roles which had been scheduled to launch on January 9 to take advantage of the Pongal festival that represents one of Tamil cinema’s most successful periods. The first reviews projected that the film would earn between ₹150 crore and ₹200 crore from ticket sales throughout Tamil Nadu based on the strong initial audience response.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) failed to issue the approval certificate before the scheduled time despite the producers conducting extensive marketing activities and selling tickets before the film’s release. The courts became the next destination for producers who wanted to achieve film clearance but the Madras High Court and Supreme Court ended up creating an extended process which prevented the movie from launching during its scheduled period.
What Caused The Delay?
The main reason for Jana Nayagan’s release delay exists because Indian film theaters need to obtain censorship certification which functions as an essential procedure for all movies that want to enter theaters. According to reports the film received its certification application three weeks before the deadline showtime. After officials from the board gave their first recommendations to the filmmakers, they implemented those changes but late objections and legal issues stopped the approval process.
Industry insiders also highlighted that the film’s political undertones coming as it does after Vijay’s formal entry into politics may have intensified scrutiny and controversy surrounding its certification, although the exact reasons remain subject to legal and regulatory debate.
Jana Nayagan Release Delay: The ₹100 Crore Blow
Without a major tentpole release to attract audiences, many screens especially single-screen theatres struggled with low occupancy during Pongal, a window traditionally known for packed houses and strong concession sales. Based on conservative estimates from trade expert Ramesh Bala, the Tamil Nadu box office is estimated to have lost around ₹100 crore, a figure that would have been considerably boosted by Jana Nayagan’s performance.
Other films that did release during this period while profitable in their own right could not fully compensate for the gap left by Jana Nayagan. The absence of a crowd-pulling headliner affected food and beverage sales and promotional tie-ins that usually accompany big releases.
Industry Reactions
The Tamil film community responded with strong reactions to the situation. The exhibitors and producers and analysts express their frustration about losing revenue and the methods which enabled the loss to occur.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala explained the loss and said, “Pongal was supposed to witness the clash of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi. However, the film’s release was stalled. Vijay’s film could easily have made ₹150-200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. Parasakthi made ₹55 crore in Tamil Nadu.”
“Since there is no projected revenue, the Tamil Nadu box office could have lost almost ₹100 crore because of Jana Nayagan’s delay,” he said.
People want the censor certification process to become more reliable and open because they want to prevent future devastating delays which occur before film releases. As of early February 2026, Jana Nayagan still doesn’t have a confirmed release date.
