The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has issued a circular asking Ph.D. and MPhil students to enter titles of their research work in Hindi, as well. The administration is justifying this move by saying that it is aimed at tracking the review of theses and dissertations online.

However, Assistant Registrar of the University told that this circular had been issued as per the Centre’s guidelines “that require mark sheets and degrees to be bilingual”. There are two different explanations coming in response to this move.

JNU Student’s Union General Secretary, Satarupa Chakraborty Informed Scroll “Today [Wednesday] is the last date for submission [of research work], and this will be a problem for a large number of students who do not come from Hindi-speaking backgrounds.” We also question the intention behind this circular and have raised the issue with the deans of several schools.”

Many students including Chakraborty have already been protesting against the circular by tagging her social media posts on the subject with #ResistHindiImpositionInJNU.

JNU has been in the limelight since last year and has been one of the major targets of BJP Government. It seems that this circular is also taken as a step of the Centre in proselytising one language for a nation like India, often known for its cultural and linguistic diversity.

The issue of Hindi imposition has hit across all the country and JNU is not spared from it as well. Earlier on Wednesday, DGCA advisory asked airlines to provide Hindi newspaper in flights.
