Competition for Top Posts

There are seven students trying for the post of President in this election. The candidates are Aditi Mishra from Left Unity, Vikas Patel from ABVP, Vikash Bishnoi from NSUI, Raj Ratan Rajoria from BAPSA, Shirshava Indu from DISHA, Shinde Vijayalaxmi from Progressive Students’ Association and Angad Singh who is an Independent student.

For the Vice-President post, the main names in the race are Left Unity’s Kizhakoot Gopika Babu, NSUI’s Shaikh Shahnawaz Alam, and ABVP’s Tanya Kumari. A total of twenty students are contesting for all four main positions which include President, Vice-President, General Secretary and Joint Secretary. The Left Unity is a group made by three student organizations working together. These groups are All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF).

Left Alliance’s Past Victory

Last year, the Left Alliance had a big success in the JNUSU elections 2024-25. They won three out of the four central posts. The President was Nitish Kumar from AISA, and the Vice-President was Manisha from DSF. The General Secretary post went to Munteha Fatima from DSF. They became very powerful in the students’ union.

But ABVP also made a strong return after ten years with a big win. They got the post of Joint Secretary as Vaibhav Meena won that seat.

High Interest in Student Politics

The JNUSU election this time again showed how important student politics is in the university. Around 5,500 students voted in the election and the turnout was 70%.

This means 70% of all students who could vote came to cast their ballots. The election had many groups trying to win. It was a four-cornered contest where the AISA-DSF alliance, ABVP, and the NSUI-Fraternity alliance fought very closely for control.
