In an alleged caste killing case, a three-month pregnant woman identified as Renuka Shakarappa Nayak, was stabbed to death in hone in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district. Investigators in charge of the case suspect that Renuka’s mother, Marevva, allegedly killed her daughter as she had married a man who did not belong to the same caste.

According to the Nidagundi Police, who have registered a case, the woman married Shankar (24), who belongs to the Lambani (Scheduled Castes) community, of Deodurg town in Raichur district two years ago against the wishes of her family. The couple had eloped and had come to stay in Yelgur village here. Shankar has a mobile phone repair shop in Nidagundi town.

According to the police, Renuka’s parents, her elder brother and brother-in-law made a sudden visit to her residence on Tuesday. Renuka’s parents asked the couple to forget the past and promised to take care of her as she was pregnant. They came home with sweets and told Renuka and her husband that they would celebrate Deepavali with them.

However, Renuka was murdered soon after Shankar went to his shop. Shankar tried to contact his wife over the phone to inquire about Deepavali preparations at home, but she did not respond. He rushed home, only to find Renuka’s throat slit and her family missing.

A case of murder under IPC 302 has been registered against the family. The police is investigating the matter further
