Karnataka: Doctor transferred for not attending JD(S) MLA before patients in queue

The tiff between a government servant and a people’s representative has gone in favour of the latter after a doctor was transferred from her government hospital service because four months back she had refused to attend a Janata Dal (Secular) MLA Mahadev, over other waiting patients.

According to the reports, the incident took place in Karnataka on September 18 last year, when the doctor named Veena Singh while busy treating woman in labour pain, was informed about MLA’s request to visit his home as he was sick.

Reportedly, Singh was on night duty and was looking after few woman in labour. She was the only doctor on duty from 4:30 pm onwards on that particular day. Also, she was treating victims of accidents.

Describing the sequence of the events, Singh told that when she went to the labour room to examine a patient, a nurse informed her that an auto driver had called her to the MLA’s house as he was not well.

Being a single doctor available in the hospital at that moment, she informed the Assistant Medical Officer Srinivas and the Auto driver about the situation.

What follow next was shocking to the doctor. It is alleged that the MLA Mahadev came to the hospital next morning with 20 to 25 of his followers along with the media and though she tried to explain the situation, he refused to understand.

After the MLA filed a complaint, the department director stated that no action would be taken against Singh since she did what was necessary according to the situation. However, despite all the assurances, Veena has now been transferred after four months since the incident.
