This portfolio list was okayed by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar not long after the swearing-in, of the fresh government that is led by the Congress-led UDF alliance. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan Takes Charge

Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan will look after Finance, Law, General Administration, Planning and Economic Affairs, Ports, Information and Public Relations, Metro Rail, Airports, Coastal Shipping, and a number of other critical wings. In effect, the arrangement suggests the government wants to make economic , and policy decisions more centralized, and guided through the Chief Minister’s Office.

Political Significance

The portfolio distribution is coming after some intense discussions inside the UDF, over representation coalition balance and community interests, it’s kinda being treated as settled. The assignment of Home to Ramesh Chennithala is being seen as a big political accommodation within the Congress leadership framework, if you ask around.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) , a very important UDF ally, has also locked in major departments like Industries, IT, Education, and Local Self Government, so that shows it still has strong grip over Kerala politics.

Meanwhile, the new Kerala cabinet took oath earlier this week after the UDF managed to win the 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections. The Satheesan-led government is likely to emphasize economic reforms, infrastructure building industrial momentum job creation and welfare policies throughout its five year term.
