Tax Deduction on Prizes
For any prize amount exceeding Rs 10,000, a flat tax of 30 percent will be deducted at source under the Income Tax Act. This means the winner of the Rs 1 crore first prize will receive approximately Rs 70 lakh after the mandatory tax deduction, before any applicable surcharge or cess. Prize amounts above Rs 10,000 will not be disbursed in cash. Instead, the department will issue a crossed cheque or demand draft in the winner’s name, or directly transfer the amount.
