A police officer has been arrested for stealing gold ornaments worth ten sovereigns from his childhood friend’s wife. Amal Dev, an officer in the AR camp of the Kochi City police, was arrested at his friend Nibin’s house in Njarakkal, Kochi.

The gold belonged to his friend’s wife and was kept in their bedroom’s cupboard. On October 13, the alleged robbery occurred. Amal Dev is from the Alappuzha district’s Aroor. “Dev has a lot of financial issues because of his involvement in playing online rummy games,” said Rajan K Aramana, SHO of Njarakkal police.

“We need to look into it further to find out more information. The complainant and the accused grew up together. As a result, the accused paid frequent visits to the complainant’s home. We began questioning the accused as part of the procedure after the family expressed concerns about him. However, when he began to exhibit unusual behaviour, it raised some concerns. Further investigation revealed that he had stolen the ornaments, which he admitted to. He had been on medical leave for a few days following this incident.” Police filed a case under Section 179 of the IPC. Some of the stolen ornaments were sold at pawn shops in Ernakulam and Njarakkal. Others were purchased. All of the ornaments were recovered by police.

According to police sources, he is also a suspect in the theft of Rs 75,000 from the Kochi City AR camp.
