Kerala: Protests trigger over death of 3 migrant workers in Kanjikode

In an appalling incident, protests were triggered over the death of three migrant workers at Kanjikode in Kerala’s Palakkad district on Monday night.

The deceased were identified as Kanayi Vishwakarma, 21; Arvind Kumar, 23; and Hariyom Kunal, 29. They were natives of P S Pandu in the Palamu district in Jharkhand.

According to media reports, they were found on the railway tracks near the Kanjikode ITI around 10:30 pm on Monday. Hariyom was found dead, while the other two were seriously injured. However, they succumbed to the injuries en route to the district hospital.

Alleging that the trio was murdered, other migrant workers attacked the fire force personnel as they tried to remove the bodies from the tracks. Six personnel suffered injuries in the attack and an ambulance too was vandalised. The police also came under attack.

Meanwhile, the labourers started pelting stones at the police. The police officers and fire force personnel sustained injuries in the attack. The vehicles of the police and fire force also were damaged in the stone-pelting. Later, more police officers came from Palakkad.

Over 100 labourers had gathered at the place in protest. The deceased were contract workers at the IIT campus. The police shifted the body of two of them to the general hospital. They are investigating the incident. However, the protests continued late into the night.
