A 21-year-old college student identified as Ranjan Debnath committed suicide while in a video conversation with his girlfriend at Barasat’s Duttapukur on Sunday night.

According to a report in a leading publication, the third-year student Debnath of New Barrackpore College, had been in depression after his father married for the second time and moved out of the house around three months ago. His mother had died long ago.

Debnath used to live with his grandparents and uncles at Baishali, Duttapukur, after his father left. Debnath used to call his girlfriend and talk about his mental agony.

During the investigation, while questioning deceased’s girlfriend, it was found that Debnath was depressed and kept telling her that he did not want to live any more. She kept advising him to be positive, but despite that he allegedly hung himself during the video call.

When the girl stopped receiving any replies from Debnath’s side, she then called a common friend who lives in Duttapukur. By the time Debnath’s family and police could be informed, it was too late.

Debnath was found hanging with a towel from the ceiling fan. No suicide note was recovered from Debnath’s room.

“Talking to people known to the youth, we came to know that he was depressed after his father got married and left him. We have registered a case of unnatural death,” said an officer of Duttapukur police station.

Police seized the mobile phones of the youth as well as that of his girlfriend. The body was sent for post-mortem.
