Actor Chae Jong Hyup Donates 50 Million: Personal Connection
Chae’s gift is very powerful thanks to the actor’s personal link to the illness. He had been diagnosed with epilepsy while still in high school and had, at times, been very open about the condition’s impact on his life and career including, once, getting deferred from military service because of his health issues.

This personal experience allows Chae to really know and sympathize with the others who are suffering from a similar disease, most of all, he knows the little patients and their families who have to deal with both treatments and social issues’ struggles.
Chae, through the association, made a wish that his donation could at least somewhat comfort and practically support the needy ones.

Korea Epilepsy Association on Donation
The Korea Epilepsy Association, the recipient of Chae’s gift, was quick to point out how much the community stands to gain from such little support. According to Kim Heung Dong, the president of the association and a child neurologist at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, the contribution not only eases the burden of medical expenses, but also importantly strengthens the morale of the patients and families who are fighting the stigma attached to the disease.
Kim Heung Dong, chairman of the Korea Epilepsy Association and a pediatric neurologist at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, stated, “This donation is a great source of encouragement, as it reflects a deep understanding of the hardships faced by epilepsy patients and their families. It is important for people with epilepsy to step forward and overcome the negative perceptions and stigma that still exist in society.”
The association has long worked to uplift individuals with epilepsy through advocacy, education, and welfare programs.
