In a gazette notification, the Ministry of Finance stated that all individuals with bank accounts have to link them with their Aadhaar number before 31 December, 2017. According to the notification, people can link as many bank accounts with their Aadhaar and choose any bank of their choice for the transaction.

There are four ways to link Aadhaar with individual bank accounts. It can be done online, using online banking or in the offline mode. According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the linking of Aadhaar to bank accounts can also be done at ATMs. Linking can also be done through Short Messaging Service (SMS), and individuals need to contact their bank’s customer care for more information.

Over 117 crore people were already enrolled for Aadhaar Cards and four lakh people were being added each day, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) CEO, Ajay Bhushan Pandey, said.

“With the infrastructure, digital payment transactions hold great scope for India to leapfrog into the new realm,” he said.

It is also mandatory now to link all mobile numbers with Aadhaar by February 2018.
