Gulf Cup holders Oman and opponents Uzbekistan commence their respective campaigns of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 in Dubai. Oman and Uzbekistan are paired alongside Japan and Turkmenistan in Group F of the competition.
Uzbekistan was admitted into the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and FIFA in 1994 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and they announced their arrival with a bang by winning the football competition in the 1994 Asian Games held in Japan.
This might be the first time that Uzbekistan will face Oman in the Asian Cup, but the recent records suggest Oman have a slight advantage heading into the contest. The two teams clashed twice in the month of May in 2014 with Oman nicking both the matches 1-0. Uzbekistan’s last win over the Gulf nation goes all the way back to September 2001.
For the first time ever, twenty-four nations will compete in the pan-Asian competition instead of the usual sixteen. As such two additional groups have been added and the two best teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams will progress in the tournament.
