Loyola College apologises following right wing’s rage over #MeToo, Modi paintings

Loyola College, one of the prestigious educational institutions in the country, apologised for a controversial art exhibition on its premises after the many right-wing groups on social media, as well as the youth wing of the BJP alleged that the paintings insulted Hindu gods and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The pictures were displayed during the cultural event, Veethi Virudhu Vizha, held on January 19 and 20 to bring into focus traditional art forms. The event was organised by the college’s student support services, which lends support to Dalit students and students from other vulnerable groups on campus.

On Monday, a BJP team lodged a complaint with the Chennai DGP against the institution for organising the exhibition that displayed “derogatory” paintings of Bharat Mata in the context of the MeToo movement and several posters as an attempt to malign Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the nation.

The art exhibition included paintings on caste violence, sexual violence, atrocities on the downtrodden and also on how the voice of activists was being muzzled. However, the most controversial of the lot was a painting that depicted Bharat Mata being a victim of the MeToo movement.

Following the controversy, the institution “immediately removed the paintings of the exhibition,  as soon as the matter was brought to the notice of the institution’s authorities. The college said that the venue was “misused” by those who held the Vithi Virudhu Vizha cultural event on 19 and 20 January.
