Dhanush starrer Maari 2 is the sequel of 2015 released Maari directed by Balaji Mohan and also features Dhanush. The duo came up with the sequel after 3 years featuring Sai Pallavi, Krishna, Tovino Thomas and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar in pivotal roles. The film is receiving mixed review due to its sluggish second half.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted the list of movies which released on December 21 with their earnings in Chennai till December 23, and undoubtedly Maari 2 secures the top position in earning because of Dhanush’s huge fan base there.

The sequel of Maari, whose trailer got 13 million views in 3 days of its release on YouTube, was expected to get a firm start at the box office. The movie marked the third best opener for Dhanush’s career with Rs 5.75 crore at the Tamil Nadu box office, although it failed to make the desired impact on viewers.
Still, with the support of fans, on Saturday, Balaji Mohan’s directorial witnessed a drop and grossed 4 crores. While on Sunday, it collected 4.25 crores and raised the opening weekend total collection to 14 crores at the Tamil Nadu box office including around 1.31 crore from Chennai.
The film failed to beat the box office collection of its prequel on its first day, and also it stands at the lower grounds as compared to Yash starrer Kannada action film KGF.
