Macintosh Computer Day 2024 (US): Macintosh Computer Day, observed on January 24, commemorates the exact date of the public introduction of the very first Macintosh computer, which served as the precursor to contemporary Apple computers. As an alternative to other computers, Macintosh entered the consumer market, heralding a new era of freedom and innovation; it remains the system of choice for creatives and technologists worldwide.

The History of Macintosh Computer Day

In 1979, Apple employee Jef Raskin introduced the Macintosh concept—an affordable, user-friendly computer designed for the average consumer. Although he intended to give the computer the name McIntosh, which would have referred to his preferred variety of apples, the orthography was altered to “Macintosh” to comply with legal requirements. Raskin, authorized to begin recruiting for the project in September 1979, did so with the inclusion of his longtime colleague, Brian Howard. Subsequently, he appointed Steve Jobs as the project director, solidifying the position of Apple computers in the annals of technology. However, Steve Wozniak implied in a 2013 interview that he had directed the Macintosh project’s initial design and development.

After a distressing airplane accident in 1981, he departed the organization temporarily, and Jobs subsequently assumed control. Wozniak stated in the same interview that the initial Macintosh “failed” during Jobs’ tenure and did not achieve success until Jobs’ departure. He ascribed the ultimate success of the Macintosh to individuals such as John Sculley, “who labored to establish a Macintosh market during the Apple II’s demise.” Apple, which was valued at $300 million almost immediately, became the most rapidly expanding enterprise in the history of the United States. Among the more than fifty companies vying for a taste of Apple, IBM emerged as the preeminent entity. Thus commenced one of the most vicious rivalries in the annals of business, during which numerous prospective contenders were abruptly discarded.

Macintosh and IBM engaged in a protracted struggle. Still, decades later, with the introduction of iPhones and iMacs, Apple would reclaim the industry in one of the most significant and protracted comebacks in the history of any sector.
