Maha Shashthi 2025 Date: Durga Puja is one of the most loved Hindu festivals, especially in Bengal and other parts of eastern India. People celebrate it with huge joy and devotion because it is the time when Goddess Durga is worshipped. The festival goes on for five days, and every day has a special name and meaning.
The days are called Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijayadashami. In 2025, the celebration will start on September 27 with Panchami and end on October 2 with Vijayadashami. Out of all the days Maha Shashthi is the one that marks the real beginning of the grand Durga Puja celebrations. This year, Maha Shashthi will be on Sunday, September 28.

Maha Shashthi Puja and Rituals
On the morning of Maha Shashthi the the priests begin with Kalparambha, which means the first set of rituals to prepare for the puja.
After that comes Bodhan, where Goddess Durga is invited into the idol. Then there are Adhivas and Amantran, which are about inviting the Goddess formally to accept the prayers and stay with her devotees during the puja.
A very important part of the day is ghata sthapana, when the priests place a sacred urn that stands for the presence of the Goddess.
The idol’s face, which is covered before this day is finally shown to everyone during a ritual called Chokkhu Daan. People believe this is the moment when the Goddess wakes up and gets ready to bless her devotees.
Devotees then offer flowers, fruits, and sweets, and they chant hymns and mantras to praise Maa Durga. Later in the evening, there is Aarti and Pushpanjali, when people join together to pray and ask for blessings of peace and prosperity.
Meaning of Maha Shashthi
For devotees, Maha Shashthi is very special because it is believed that on this day Goddess Durga comes down to Earth from her heavenly home. She arrives with her children, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Lakshmi, and Saraswati.

From Shashthi onwards, she stays with her devotees for the next few days. People believe her presence brings health, happiness, and prosperity to everyone. This day also reminds people of the victory of divine power and feminine energy over all evil forces.
