In Kerala’s Malappuram district, one of the greatest mosques has decided to reduce noise pollution by delivering only one azaan on loudspeaker instead of five. Inspired by one of the biggest mosques in Vazhakkad, the 17 other small mosques have also decided to opt the same option.

An agreement was made last Sunday wherein the two factions of Sunni and Mujahid (Salafi), Jamate Islami and Tableeg Jamath also decided to stop the using loudspeakers.

In the agreement, it was decided that the grand mosques will deliver the azaan on loudspeakers while the other smaller mosques will only repeat it without using the speakers. The concept of delivering the azaan on loudspeakers, five times a day is now dismissed.

The president of the council, TP Abdul Azeez told Chronicle, “The decision was in response to the public opinion that indiscriminate use of loudspeakers had a negative effect on nearby schools, merchants and even public meetings of various organisations and that it should be stopped”.

Earlier in April 2017, Bollywood singer, Sonu Nigam was criticised a lot for his tweet where he said that the early morning azaan disturbed his sleep. He was even given murder threats despite the fact that the singer cleared his intentions saying that he meant the use of loudspeakers in general and not azaan.

However, in order to unify the timings of the azaan prayer, a five-member panel has been set as well. This will help in maintaining the coordination between the mosques nearby.

Previously in 2015, the Muslim League supremo Hyderali Thangal also requested the mosque authorities to minimise the usage of loudspeakers.
