RD Sharma Stars in Flipkart Ad

RD Sharma Stars in Flipkart Ad: Everyone knows those math problems from school about buying too many watermelons or boxes of bananas. For many kids, these problems felt more like silly stories than real math. And behind many of those questions was the name everyone remembers from school – Dr R.D. Sharma.

Now Sharma has suddenly become a viral face online, not for any new math trick but for an advertisement. Flipkart made him the star of their new Big Billion Days campaign, and the internet went crazy seeing him in this new avatar.

Instead of putting a movie star or sports hero in the ad, Flipkart decided to bring the math teacher of an entire generation. The video starts inside a classroom where students are struggling with math during an exam.

One says, “Thirty watermelons, 60 per cent off?” and another continues, “Thirty more for 20 per cent off? What’s the final price?” Then one of them asks loudly, “Aree aise question banata hai kaun?”

Right after this, the camera shows Dr Sharma smiling and he says, “Naam toh suna hoga.” He then jokes about the kind of problems he is famous for, adding, “Log puchte hai, itne tarbooz kaun kharidta hai. Pi bhi irrational hai aur mai bhi.”

On Instagram, Flipkart posted the video with the caption, “The Math is Mathing | Dr. R.D. Sharma | Flipkart Big Billion Days. Phones keep getting faster. Shoes keep getting fancier. Life around us is changing every day. But somehow, math questions have stayed exactly the same.”

They also added, “So this Big Billion Days, we asked the man who taught us all math— Dr. R.D. Sharma — to change that. He’s inviting you to write math problems for today’s world. The funnier, quirkier, and more real, the better! Share yours in the comments, and the best ones will turn into offers on Flipkart Big Billion Days.”

The man behind the textbooks

For most students in India, the name R.D. Sharma is almost like a brand. His full name is Ravi Dutta Sharma and he is one of the most popular mathematicians in the country. His books are used in schools across India, especially CBSE classes 9 to 12, and also by students preparing for engineering entrance exams.
