Medicaid Work Requirements: New Proposal Could Put Millions at Risk of Losing Coverage

Medicaid, a government program providing health care to low-income Americans, is set to undergo significant changes with the introduction of work requirements, aiming to encourage job seekers and save government money.

Medicaid Work Requirements: A new plan by Republican lawmakers could bring big changes to Medicaid, a government program that helps millions of low-income Americans get health care. The proposal suggests adding work requirements for people who use Medicaid. This means some adults would need to prove they have a job, are looking for work, or are doing approved activities like job training to keep their health coverage.

Supporters of the plan say it will encourage people to work and save money for the government. However, studies show that similar rules in the past did not help people find jobs. Instead, many people lost their health insurance because they could not meet the complicated requirements.

2025 Work Rules Bill Impact

In 2025, a new bill was introduced to make these work rules apply across the country. If the bill passes, states would have to follow these rules or create their own similar policies. A few years ago, Arkansas tried this idea, and over 18,000 people lost their Medicaid coverage in less than a year. Most of these people were already working or should have been excused from the rules, but they could not figure out how to report their information correctly.

Many people who use Medicaid already work, but their jobs often do not offer health insurance. About 92% of adults on Medicaid who are under 65 and not disabled are either working, taking care of family members, going to school, or dealing with health problems that stop them from working. The other 8% say they cannot find work or are retired.

Critics of the plan say it will make it harder for people to keep their health insurance instead of helping them find jobs. A report by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that if these work rules become law, about 1.5 million people could lose their Medicaid coverage every year. At the same time, the rules would not increase the number of people working.

Medicaid Costs and Impact

The plan could also cost a lot of money to put into action. For example, Arkansas spent a lot of resources to manage its work requirements, and Georgia’s program has already cost over $40 million, with most of the money going to paperwork instead of health care.

Losing Medicaid coverage can hurt people’s health and finances. Studies show that having health insurance helps people stay healthy and keep their jobs. Without Medicaid, many people might delay going to the doctor, which can lead to worse health problems and higher costs in the future.

While Congress debates this plan, some states might try to create their own work rules for Medicaid. However, similar rules in the past have faced legal challenges, and courts have often stopped them.

With so many people relying on Medicaid for health care, this debate is just starting. The decision could affect millions of lives and cost billions of dollars, making it one of the most important issues in health care today.
