On Thursday, a BJP leader in Meghalaya resigned as a mark of protest against the Centre’s rule, banning cattle trade for slaughter. Bernard N Marak, former West Garo Hills district president, resigned from the party. He had earlier said that the party would bring down beef prices in the state, if it comes to power in the upcoming assembly polls.

Many leaders have openly expressed their reservations over the Centre’s decision of putting a ban on sale and purchase of cattle. On Wednesday, former Union minister and Congress MP Vincent H Pala urged PM Narendra Modi to lift the ban on the sale of cattle for slaughter in beef consuming states like Meghalaya.

He wrote a formal petition to the PM and urged him to keep all the states in mind, before arriving at any such decision. Meghalaya has been ranked as the top beef-consuming state in the country where 80.74% of the population eat beef, according to the latest National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).

Reportedly, a BJP leader in Meghalaya was planning to host a beef party to celebrate three years of Modi –led NDA government at the Centre. Such was the height of anger within the party against the Centre’s ban on cattle slaughter.
