In the latest scam in Bihar’s Munger district, an RTI reveals dead people receiving wages for working under government’s employment scheme MNREGA. Due to administrative apathy, a libel letter has been filed in the court. The court has ordered to register an FIR against the accused.

Right to Information activist Muhammad Nadeem Ahmad had filed an RTI. According to the report, an incident of already dead people working under the government’s employment scheme MNREGA has come to light.

Nadeem had filed an RTI after he got to know that a woman of the village who has died already has her name enrolled as an employee in the on-going project of land-filling in a field. Nadeem tried to cross-check the report with facts and found that there is only one lady in Kamargama called Savitri Devi having a husband called Narayan Paswan. However, Savitri Devi had died on February 28, 2017.

Savitri’s name was enrolled in multiple development projects of MNREGA under different names and there are bank accounts opened where the wages are also received by someone. Nadeem wrote a complaint to the District Administrator into the matter where he did not get any response. The passive response of the District Administrator forced the RTI activist to take the matter to the court. The court directed Munger SP Gaurav Mangla to file an FIR and start taking action against the accused on July 7, 2018.

Upon the court’s order, the police registered a case against the accused in the Tarapur Police Station on August 1, 2018, and also assured to take actions against the accused after the investigations.

It has been several months since the police registered an FIR, but no arrest has been made so far. According to sources, the police is also ignoring because of the family of village headmen’s involvement in the case.
