Modi Govt to set up GoM to investigate #MeToo allegations; set aside Maneka Gandhi’s committee

New Delhi: In a major decision on investigating the #MeToo allegations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led BJP government decides to set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) to lead the investigation on Wednesday.

However, earlier Women and Child Development Ministry (WCD) led by Union Minister Maneka Gandhi had announced to constitute a committee to investigate the complaints of sexual abuse under the #MeToo campaign.

The GoM will investigate the complaints of sexual abuse and will update the government with its findings. The Government will act accordingly on the report and take up measures to prevent and stop such harassment against women.

Sources close to the government says that senior women minister may lead the GoM.

Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi is serious about #MeToo allegations. Recently, she had requested the government to form a special committee of retired judges to probe in the serious charges. However, the cabinet has rejected her demands of the probe by retired judges, as per the report.

Gandhi had said that the committee will study the currently available legal framework regarding the redressal of cases regarding sexual harassment at the workplace and will advise the ministry to make it stronger and effective.

Maneka Gandhi has stated that such harassment against women at their workplace is not acceptable and won’t be tolerated.
