Morgan Freeman’s Debut Blues Album: Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman has surprised fans by stepping into the music scene at 89. The legendary Hollywood presence has now officially announced his debut album, Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience, marking his first big musical project after a long span of years when he kept celebrating and supporting blues music in general.
The announcement landed alongside the release of the album’s lead single, Death Letter Blues, on Juneteenth, picked as a date to honor the deep historical and cultural foundations of the blues across African American history. The whole record is set to come out on August 7, 2026, through Decca Records.

For starters, Death Letter Blues is a fresh retelling of the classic tune first made widely known by the legendary Delta blues musician Son House. The track features Taj Mahal, a five-time Grammy Award winner, on lead vocals and guitar, where traditional blues meets orchestral textures.
As the production team has explained, the recording was built between the historic Royal Studios in Memphis and London’s Abbey Road Studios. This is basically a meeting point between authentic Delta blues traditions and a full symphony orchestra.

Why Freeman Chose Juneteenth for the Release?
Freeman explained that releasing the song on Juneteenth was intentional rather than symbolic.
“I heard the blues for the first time on my grandmother’s porch in the Mississippi Delta, and it has never left me,” Freeman said in the official announcement.
He added that having Taj Mahal perform Death Letter Blues was the perfect introduction to the project because the song reflects where blues music originated and the people who created it. Freeman said he hopes listeners “listen and remember” the music’s history and cultural significance.
Speaking about his connection to the genre, Freeman said, “I heard the blues for the first time on my grandmother’s porch in the Mississippi Delta, and it has never left me.”
The actor also explained why Death Letter Blues was chosen as the album’s first release. “Having Taj Mahal kick off this album with a cover of Son House’s classic ‘Death Letter Blues’ strikes the perfect tone for the introduction of this album.”
“Releasing this on Juneteenth is not just symbolic — it is the truth of where this music comes from and who made it. I hope people listen and remember,” he added.
Producer Eric Meier echoed that sentiment, describing Juneteenth as the only appropriate day to release the single because the blues emerged from the same historical experiences commemorated by the holiday.
Rather than creating a conventional studio album, Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience has been designed as a cinematic exploration of more than a century of blues music.
Freeman serves as narrator and producer while collaborating with acclaimed musicians including Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’, Shemekia Copeland, Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell, Alvin Youngblood Hart and members of the Chineke! Orchestra.
The 12-track collection spans iconic blues standards and contemporary interpretations, celebrating the genre’s enduring influence on modern music.

Alongside the album announcement, Freeman unveiled a limited three-date live tour to support the release.
The performances are scheduled for:
- August 7: Houston, Texas
- September 26: Memphis, Tennessee
- October 17: Gulfport, Mississippi
