Days after internal strife to gain power over the party and its headquarters, the two factions of the Samajwadi Party are all set to approach the Election Commission of India on Monday to stake claim on the party symbol ‘cycle’.

Mulayam Singh Yadav headed to New Delhi and sought time with the Election Commission at 4 pm on Monday. The former chief of the SP also canceled the party meeting which was scheduled for Jan 5.

As per the sources, both splinter groups of the party, one headed by patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and other by CM Akhilesh Yadav – will furnish evidence to prove who have the actual authority over the SP.

The Akhilesh side was sending party national General-Secretary-turned-mentor Ram Gopal as its representative to the poll panel.

On the other hand, the party founder Mulayam Singh himself will lead the team and would be accompanied by loyal younger brother Shivpal Singh Yadav and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh. Singh returned halfway leaving his New Year family vacation in London.

After taking charge as the working national president of the party at an emergency national convention on Sunday, Akhilesh also replaced state unit chief Shivpal Singh with his loyalist Naresh Uttam.   However, the meeting, declared illegal and ‘unconstitutional’ by Mulayam Singh.

Reportedly, Mulayam Singh got high blood pressure in the night and a team of doctors was requisitioned for a medical check-up.
