Muzaffarnagar cow-slaughter rumours: Five cops among 8 injured in stone-pelting

At least eight persons, including five policemen, were injured on Friday after a group of people resorted to stone-pelting in Muzaffarnagar. People turned violent as a police team raided some houses on information of cow slaughter at Sherpur village.Two police motorcycles were also set on fire, police said.

SP city Rakesh Kumar Singh said the incident started when the police raided a house after they received info about cow slaughter on police helpline no 100. After police failed to find any suspicious item during the search, they started searching nearby houses. This annoyed the people, an eyewitness said.

People opposed police action and started pelting them with stones. But senior police officers have rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Security has been heightened up in the area. Extra police force has been positioned in the village to ease the pressure, police sources said.
