Netaji played major role in freeing India from colonialism: PM Modi

Paying tribute to Subhash Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that Netaji had played a major role in attaining independence for the country.

“I salute Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary. His valour played a major role in freeing India from colonialism,” Modi tweeted.

He said Netaji Bose was a great intellectual who always thought about the interests and wellbeing of the marginalised sections of society.

On the occasion, Modi also highlighted that his government had declassified files on Bose. “Honoured that our government got the opportunity to declassify files relating to Netaji Bose & fulfil a popular demand pending for decades,” he said in another tweet.

In 1997, the National Archives of India had received 990 declassified files pertaining to the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) from the Ministry of Defence.

In 2012, 271 files/ items pertaining to the Khosla Commission, and 759 files/ items of Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry, in total 1030 files/items were received from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

All these files/ items are already open to the public under the Public Records Rules, 1997.
