New Hospital Pricing Rules: The central government has taken an important step to stop unfair billing and wrong practices in private hospitals. Under new health rules, hospitals must now clearly tell patient families the full cost of ICU and ventilator treatment before starting care. Hospitals must also take written permission from the family before putting a patient on a ventilator. This rule applies to all private hospitals across the country.

The move aims to protect families from sudden and very high hospital bills during medical emergencies. The government wants hospitals to treat very sick patients as a medical duty and not as a way to make money.

A senior DGHS official explained this clearly and said, “if any critically ill patient has to be treated, it should be treated as a medical challenge and not a cause of financial ruin.”

New Rules to Stop Misuse of Ventilators

The Directorate General of Health Services has released official rules called “Guidelines for Transparency in Ventilator Use in Private Hospitals.” These rules focus on stopping the unnecessary use of life-saving machines like ventilators.

Hospitals have to now keep proper records of patients who stay on ventilators for more than 14 days. The government will review these records to make sure ventilators are used only when truly needed.

This decision comes at a time when the ventilator business in India is growing fast. Data from Credence Research Inc. shows the Indian ventilator market was worth USD 207 million in 2024 and may grow to USD 351.12 million by 2032. Because of this growth, the government wants strict checks so patient care stays honest and fair.

What Private Hospitals Must Follow Now

As per the new rules, hospitals must follow these points exactly as listed:

• Clear and Informed Consent
• Disclosure of Daily Costs
• Uniform Fee Structure
• Public Display
• Usage-Based Billing
• Time-Limited Trial (48-72 hours)
• Special Monitoring After 14 Days

Hospitals must also create a time-bound system to handle complaints. If families feel there is wrong billing or hidden charges, they can file a formal complaint. The hospital must respond within a fixed time.
