The abrupt decision to ban non-vegetarian food and alcohol in Jaipur Municipal Corporation halls have created a debate among the people.

The corporation has cited hygiene and sentiment issues by the residents as the prime reason for prohibition. The residents have criticised the decision and termed it as anti-people as many poor people who used to eat non-veg would not be able to avail the facility provided at a concessional rate.

A resident of Barkat Nagar stated, “The JMC will have to not make insurance policies on the foundation of caste and faith. It will have to be formulated to profit each segment of society. Banning non-vegetarian meals in government community halls will create a divide in the society.”

JMC license committee determined to prohibit non-veg meals, alcohol and hukka all over marriage ceremonies, events or every other function. The decision has left many citizens in trouble who have already booked the venues for the marriage.

JMC officials are claiming to have gained complaints of humans residing around the community halls in regards to the meat and alcohol left behind, after party. “Many community halls are near temples and home areas. People have complained in regards to the garbage left behind after party. I agree that the community halls are public assets but that is supposed to be for the convenience of the general public.

Regarding the individuals who have already booked the halls, the chairman of the licensing committee Mahesh Kalwani stated that they will present the topic in the meeting and will take the decision accordingly.
