He was so well-liked, he made the gods a little uneasy. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, who asked Mahabali for just three steps of land. The king, truly kind, agreed. At that point, Vamana grew to cover the earth and the sky in two steps. Mahabali, humbly offered the third step on his head and was forced into the netherworld.
But Vishnu had a soft spot for Mahabali because of Mahabali’s devotion to his people. So, Vishnu allowed Mahabali to visit his kingdom once a year. That half day of homecoming is celebrated as Onam, a reminder of justice, humility, and devotion.
