The price of shallots or small onions in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu is escalating, where the rate has increased to Rs 100 from Rs 30 a kilo. Onions have been witnessing an increase in price since the last few days.

Due to the prevailing drought situation in the state, the production of onions has declined, resulting in sharp price rise. For the past few months, some vegetables have witnessed a 150 % rise in prices

Farmers said that even as small onions have become dearer, the price of large onions is going down.

The big onions come to Kerala from Pune in large numbers.

Onions are an important ingredient in cooking in any household. Three months back, they were available for Rs 25 a kg, but in March their price rose to Rs 40 a kilo. By mid-April, it was Rs 70.

The office-bearers of Traders Association said that the onion prices reached Rs 90 in the first week of May.
