An overloaded boat capsized in the Yamuna River on Thursday in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat, killing at least 22 people and many still feared drowned. The boat, which was carrying 60 people, capsized and 22 persons drowned, said district magistrate, Bhawani Singh.

Officials have fished out 22 bodies while 10 others have been rescued so far.

The overcrowded boat was moving towards Haryana when the incident took place. Soon, the officials reached the accident spot and have begun rescue operations. As of now, there is hardly any trace of more than a dozen others who were in the boat. The number of casualties might go up.

Rescued people have been admitted to a nearby medical facility. Boat was overcrowded and it could be reason behind the tragedy. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief and issued instructions that the kin of the deceased be given Rs 2 lakh.
