- PNB Debit Card Rule Change:State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) announced that it will end free domestic airport lounge access for its RuPay Platinum debit card holders on April 1, 2026, which will impact thousands of customers who used this travel benefit during the past years.
In an official statement, PNB said all complimentary lounge access benefits linked to its RuPay Platinum debit card will be withdrawn from April 1, 2026. From that date, cardholders will no longer be able to enter domestic airport lounges simply by presenting their debit card.
PNB Debit Card Rule Change: New Spending-Based Eligibility
While the unconditional free access is ending, the bank has clarified that free lounge access may still be available under new conditions based on quarterly spending. According to the revised policy, from April 15, 2026, free domestic airport lounge access will depend on how much a customer spends on their card in the preceding quarter.
Under the revised criteria:
Cardholders must spend a minimum of ₹5,000 (through point-of-sale or e-commerce transactions) in a given quarter to be eligible for free domestic lounge access in the following period.
For example, spending ₹5,000 between January 1 and March 31, 2026 will make a cardholder eligible for lounge access from April 15 to July 14, 2026.
What This Means for PNB Customers?
For existing and new RuPay Platinum debit cardholders, this marks a significant shift in travel-related benefits. Until now, many users were able to access lounges at major Indian airports without any spending requirements, which made the PNB RuPay Platinum debit card attractive for frequent flyers. With the new rules, the benefit becomes conditional and spending-linked.
According to the PNB website, “Discontinuation of all Complimentary Lounge Access on PNB RuPay Platinum Debit Cards.’ Dear PNB RuPay Platinum debit card customers, kindly note that all complimentary lounge access facilities on PNB RuPay Platinum debit cards will be discontinued from April 1, 2026. This is for your information and necessary action.”
The bank’s statement also included answers to common queries about other debit card features such as procedures for reporting lost or stolen cards, issuance fees, replacement charges, and available insurance schemes.
Why Banks Are Revising Lounge Access Perks?
Banks have conducted more assessments of lifestyle benefits which include lounge access because they now connect these benefits to required spending limits or they replace these benefits with digital voucher systems to control expenses and stop fraudulent activities. Other lenders and card issuers have made similar adjustments in recent years to balance customer perks with operational sustainability.
