Power Tariff to Remain Unchanged

Power Tariff to Remain Unchanged: According to Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), the new amendments to electricity regulations by the federal government will not affect Tamil Nadu households. In a statement published on Saturday, Tangedco clarified that the new amendments stipulate that Time of Day (ToD) charges are 20% higher during evening peak hours. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) is the sole authority in the state for determining electricity rates. Currently, ToD charges are not pertinent to residential customers under the existing tariff, according to the utility provider.

A senior official informed TNIE, “According to the tariff that went into effect on September 10, 2022, peak hour charges for commercial high and low tension consumers have increased from 20% to 25%. However, it was subsequently reduced to 15% for industries covered by the Low Tension (LT) III B tariff. In addition, the morning peak hours have been changed from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. to 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the evening peak hours have been changed from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to 6 p.m. to 10 p.

ToD metres are not currently available for Low Tension (LT) customers. However, until the metres are installed, the electricity regulatory commission has authorised the utility to collect a 20% surcharge on current consumption. For example, if an LT customer consumes 100 units of electricity, the utility will compute it as 120 units (including an additional 20% for ToD), according to the official, who added that Tangedco has no plans to implement ToD fees for residential customers.\

A second official added, “An expert panel has been tasked with preparing a feasibility report for the installation of ToD metres for LT consumers.” Once we receive the report from the commission, we will begin installing the metres.” Ponmalar, a resident of Thirumalisai who operates a SME, stated that she is oblivious of the ToD metres because Tangedco has not yet installed them in her business.

She presently pays a flat rate for her electricity costs. Before September 2022, Ponmalar’s electricity bill was Rs 16,000. Now, the price has risen to Rs 40,000.” If ToD metres are deployed, my electricity bill could decrease.

However, I have doubts regarding its efficacy.” Repeal amendments: PMK PMK founder S Ramadoss implored the Union government to repeal the new electricity rule amendments. Ramadoss implored the state government in a statement to exert pressure on the federal government to repeal them.
