With speculations that Congress party will choose its successor for Sonia Gandhi soon, the name of Priyanka Gandhi has emerged as a probable chief. The Congress Working Committee (CWC) met on 8 August and possibly held a talk on the change of guard of the party.
Reportedly, at the meeting, Sonia Gandhi raised the topic of a change in leadership. Some senior leaders, including former PM Manmohan Singh have considered if Priyanka can replace Sonia. However, Priyanka’s personal assistant, P Sahay has termed the report as “complete fabrication”. “No such discussion took place whatsoever!” he said.
The DNA report quoted a CWC member as saying, “It wasn’t a casual question. She clearly had something on her mind. There is lot of merit in this move, if it happens.”
The idea of Priyanka Gandhi as Congress president has been backed by many. The final decision is expected to be taken in a couple of months. Notably, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi skipped the CWC meeting due to health reasons.
