Punishment or Reward? UP cops who assaulted girl for having Muslim lover, posted to CM Yogi’s Gorakhpur

Week after a video of Meerut police assaulting a woman for choosing a Muslim partner went viral raising huge controversy, it has emerged that the accused cops have been transferred, and dispatched to Gorakhpur, the home base of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath. The transfer of the policemen has raised eye-brows as many feel it is more a reward than punishment.

What is more startling is that out of 18 attackers, not even a single attacker, allegedly linked to the right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad, has been arrested for thrashing the Muslim man. No case has been filed against the police personnel who beat the Hindu woman and watched the man being beaten by goons.

Meanwhile, the accused constables were suspended. The three policemen have now been transferred. “The accused constables, Salek Chand and Neetu Singh, have been transferred to Gorakhpur and constable Priyanka Singh has been transferred to Varanasi. We are waiting for the departmental enquiry to finish, after which due action will be taken,” said Akhilesh Kumar, SSP Meerut.

Last week, after a group of Vishwa Hindu Parishad workers apprehended an interfaith couple in Meerut, police officials had rescued the girl and took it on themselves to school her over her relationship with a Muslim boy. Not just verbal abuse, a lady cop could be seen thrashing the girl in the video that went viral on the Internet.
