Amritsar: Farmers for second day in succession block the Amritsar-Jalandhar section of the busy Amritsar-Delhi rail route. Government has been asking the farmers to lift the protest.

The farmers, under the banner of Kisan Sangarsh Committee (KSC), have blocked the railway tracks, accusing banks and various financial institutions of harassing them for farmers failure to repay loans. Satnam Singh Pannu, KSC president said despite the government extending loan waiver to farmers, banks and financial institutions had been harassing them.

Pannu claimed that the farmers were not getting adequate remuneration for their crops. He adeed, “400 crore of sugarcane farmers is due with the government for the last one-and-a-half years. You pay us this money along with the interest. We are paying interests on the loans. You are sitting on farmer’s hard-earned money and we are being forced to live a miserable life.

He further accused the government of ignoring these due payments.

Pannu and his supporters also raised slogans on the issue of farmers’ suicide. In May 2018, Jatinder Singh, a farmer from Kachharbhann in the Zira sub-division, committed suicide after failing to repay his loans. Accusation were made against Congress leader Inderjit Singh Zira and his son, the Zira MLA Kulbir Singh Zira of compelling Jatinder Singh to take his life.

“Capt. Amarinder Singh is not ready to arrest Inderjit Singh Zira and his son Kulbir Singh Zira. The government had agreed to this demand of ours but hasn’t acted on it till date,” Pannu said.

Following the blockade, the Railways cancelled as many as 22 trains, while diverting eight others. The Railways further announced to cancel 31 more trains on Wednesday.
