Ludhiana: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurpreet Gogi, representing Ludhiana West, was found dead late Friday night under tragic circumstances. The 58-year-old legislator reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to his head, which his family claims was the result of an accidental shooting.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja confirmed the incident, stating that Gogi was declared dead upon arrival at Dayanand Medical College (DMC) Hospital in Ludhiana. “As per the family, he accidentally shot himself and sustained bullet injuries to his head. The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report is received,” Teja said.
The incident occurred around 11:30 PM, and Gogi’s body has been moved to the mortuary. Further investigations into the circumstances leading to his death are currently underway.
A Shocking Loss for AAP and Punjab
The sudden demise of Gogi has left his party and supporters in shock. Punjab Minister Hardip Singh Mundian expressed his grief, calling it a personal loss. “We received very unfortunate news of the demise of Gurpreet Gogi. What we know is that it was an accident. It’s a loss for the party and me personally. He was like an elder brother,” Mundian said.
Gogi joined AAP in 2022 and quickly rose to prominence after defeating two-time Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana Assembly elections. Over the past two years, he had been actively involved in addressing key issues in his constituency, earning him respect among his supporters.
A Leader with a Legacy of Action
Known for his hands-on approach, Gogi had recently made headlines in August 2024 when he publicly dismantled the foundation stone of a delayed Buddha Nullah pipeline project he had inaugurated in 2022. Frustrated by bureaucratic delays, he demanded accountability from authorities.
Just hours before his death, Gogi visited the Prachin Sheetla Mata Mandir, where he assured devotees of action against burglars who had recently stolen silver from the temple.
Gogi’s wife, Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, is also active in local politics, having contested municipal elections, though she lost to Congress candidate Inderjit Singh Indi.
Ongoing Investigation
While the family insists that the shooting was accidental, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Ludhiana’s Commissioner of Police, Kuldeep Singh Chahal, and District AAP President Sharanpal Singh Makkar have confirmed that the police are investigating all possible angles.
