Punjab: Controversial Punjabi poet Surjit Gag attacked for hurting religious sentiments

Gag is considered as a controversial poet for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Sikh and Hindu community through his poems.

Punjabi controversial poet Surjit Gag, who was arrested in 2017 after a complaint filed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), was whipped on Sunday in Anandpur Sahib. Gag said, “He was attacked by two persons at a shop near the Charanganga Bridge. He (Surjit Gag)  tried to flee, but the duo chased him on a bike and caught hold of him near Takht Kesgarh Sahib gurdwara, where he was beaten up. Yadwinder and his accomplices had attacked him twice in July last year”.

He further said that ” One of his goons was Yadvinder Singh alias Yadi, a resident of nearby Jhinjri village.” Gag is considered as a controversial poet for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Sikh and Hindu community through his poems.

On July 9, 2017, Gag was arrested after the SGPC  blamed that, he had hurt religious sentiments of the Sikhs by sharing his poem ‘Main te Nanak’ (I and Nanak) on Facebook. Further, he got and booked again in January for writing an essay on Dasehra, in which he used insulting language against Hindu gods.
