Early years
Ranganathan Madhavan was born in Jamshedpur, Bihar (now Jharkhand), India on 1 June 1970 to Tamil Iyengar parents.His mother, Saroja, was a manager at the Bank of India, while his father, Ranganathan Iyengar, was a management executive at Tata Steel. His younger sibling, Devika, is a software engineer. In Jharkhand, he had a Tamil-speaking upbringing. Madhavan attended D.B.M.S. English School Jamshedpur for his education.
In 1988, Madhavan received a scholarship to represent India as a cultural ambassador from Rajaram College, Kolhapur, and participated in a Rotary International exchange programme in Stettler, Alberta, Canada.
