The Congress Working Committee formally initiated the process for the election of party chief on Monday.

Reportedly, a poll notification will be issued on December 1. The nomination process will be completed by December 4 while the voting will be held on December 16. The results will be declared on December 19.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is likely to resign from the role and could continue as chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party. She herself chaired the meeting today.

The meeting was attended by Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with senior party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Ahmed Patel, P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Sushilkumar Shinde and Karan Singh.

On the last day of filing the nomination, if no other contestant files against Rahul Gandhi, then he will be declared President unopposed. The Congress had earlier set a deadline to complete the organisational elections by October-end.
