The Indian Railways extended the use of demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes for ticketing, on-board catering and refund of tickets till Nov 14.

“The use of demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination was extended up to November 14 tonight, and all concerned in the Indian Railways have been instructed to comply with the latest instruction”, Railway spokesperson told media.

The railways had announced stop giving refund in cash and instead issuing ticket deposit receipts (TDR).

Refund of more than 10,000 rupee will only be transferred to the customer’s bank account and the concerned person is required to furnish the account details.

While scrapping Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes from the midnight of November 8, the government had allowed use of old currencies at government hospitals, public transport, airline ticketing, milk booth, crematoriums and railway ticketing for the next 72 hours.

This list was later expanded to payment services for road toll, metro rail tickets, medical shops, LPG gas agencies, electricity and water bills.

Meanwhile, the demonetisation move has attracted heavy rush at railway ticket counters. Most of the counters were facing cash shortage.
