The ministry of railways has decided to introduce surge pricing for its high-speed and in demand Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains. The ticket tariffs will increase by up to 10% on the base price with every 10% of tickets sold. The fare would keep going up with the number of tickets sold.

The surge pricing will be applied from September 9. The ministry has said that it would not apply to fares for its top tier AC first class and Executive Class seats. For 2AC and Chair Car, the maximum hike is 50% while for 3AC, it is 40%.

The government said that the other supplementary charges like reservation charge, super-fast charge, catering charge and service tax will remain at the same level.

Here is how surge pricing is going to affect you:

  • Train ticket fares during peak holidays and festive seasons will go up.
  • Other supplementary charges like reservation charges, Superfast charge, Catering charges, Service tax etc will be levied separately
  • Tickets under current booking shall be sold at the last price sold for that class
  • No additional charges as ‘Tatkal charges’ will be levied

The revised fares will not apply to tickets already issued in advance for journeys to commence on or after 09.09.2016. Surge pricing will as of now be limited only to three trains – Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto, mostly preferred by middle-class passengers. There are total 42 Rajdhani trains, 46 Shatabdi and 54 Duronto trains.
