After the drubbing of the Congress party at the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections 2019, Rahul Gandhi was reportedly persistent on resigning from the post of the president despite strong persuasion from party leaders.

According to a newspaper report, Rahul Gandhi may step down as the Congress chief and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot may take over the charge.

Congress, according to a Navbharat Times report, seems to have made up their mind to appoint Ashok Gehlot for the post. It is yet to be cleared if Gehlot will be the only president of the party or if there will be 2-3 more leaders holding the post.

The report comes a day after Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday greeted Congress President Rahul Gandhi on his birthday and urged him to remain the party chief in the interests of the country and people. Gehlot had told the media: “We urge Rahulji to take up the leadership of the party in the interests of the country and people.”

Ashok Gehlot is reportedly being chosen owing to his experience in running the party affairs and the result the Congress achieved under his guidance in the 2017 Gujarat Assembly Elections.
