Remembering Yash Chopra, the ‘King of Romance’ on his 89th birth anniversary

Yash Chopra would have been 89 today. One of India’s finest and most influential filmmakers, Chopra was known as the King of Romance and helped make the careers of two of Hindi film industry’s biggest stars — Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Known for his fairytale-like romances, Yash’s films like Kabhi Kabhie, Waqt, Deewaar among others influenced an entire generation of filmmakers. Here are a few rare photos of the filmmaker.

Today is the birth anniversary of Yash Chopra who is known as the famous director of Hindi cinema industry and King of Romance. Let’s have a look at his life journey. Yash was born on 27 September 1932 in Lahore, Pakistan. Yash has given many hits in his film career. All his films were especially romantic and because of this Yash had made a special identity in the industry. People used to get involved in the story of all their films in such a way that they adapted themselves to that environment. Almost all of Yash’s films touched people’s hearts. Today on his birthday, we are telling you some special things related to Yash.

Yash’s parents had eight children and they were the youngest among them. Yash had come to Mumbai with the dream of becoming an engineer after completing his schooling. But before he started his studies, he started his film career as an assistant director with his elder brother BR Chopra and IS Johar in 1959 through the film ‘Dhool Ka Phool’. After this, Yash remained like the Hindi cinema industry. Yash has given more than one film in his career like ‘Deewar, Kabhi Kabhi, Dar, Chandni, Silsila, Dil To Pagal Hai, Veer Zaara’.

Yash, through his films, has taken the romance to a different level on the big screen. Yash has given big recognition to big actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan through his films. Yash may be called King of Romance but he still did Arrange Marriage. Yash married Pamela Chopra in 1970. They have two sons, Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra. Aditya is a well-known director in the industry and Uday is a Bollywood actor.

Chopra was known to often cast the same actors in his films, his most famous collaborations being with Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Raakhee, Waheeda Rehman and more recently, Shahrukh Khan.

He died of dengue fever during Jab Tak Hai Jaan’s production in 2012. On 13 October 2012, Chopra was diagnosed with dengue fever and was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, Bandra, in Mumbai. On 21 October Yash Chopra succumbed to death following multiple organ failure. He was 80 years of age. The Chautha Ceremony for Yash Chopra was held on 25 October 2012 at Yash Raj Films studio. Yash Chopra’s final rites took place at Pawan Hans crematorium on 22 October 2012.
