‘Rent a family’- A booming business in Japan

This is known to few that one can rent a family in Japan, yes, you read it right. Japanese people with no relative can hire a husband, a mother, or even a grandson. A rental family service or professional stand in service provides actors who portray as friends, family members, coworkers for social events like a wedding or also to provide companionship. This type of service was first offered in Japan during the early 1990s.

Though this service can be very helpful for people suffering loneliness or even for single parents to fight discrimination still there has been a lot said about these rental services. Some of them even asked if it is a sort of human trafficking. But it is not the way as it is portrayed. There are some set of rules that have to be followed under the rental services.

The rental partners and spouses are not supposed to be alone with the clients or any kind of physical contact beyond holding hands are not allowed.

There have been many instances where people have found themselves in circumstances to rent a family member. One of them includes, a man didn’t want to tell her fiancée about his parent’s death, so he rented a family as a replacement.

A company family romance launched “Real Appeal” service in 2017. It provided clients with actors to pose with the client in photographs meant to be shared on social media. The cost of each actor was ¥8,000 per hour, with a two-hour minimum, and all travel expenses were borne by the client.

Ishii Yuichi, founder and head of Family Romance, 2017 reveals “I played a father for a 12-year-old with a single mother. The girl was bullied because she didn’t have a dad, so the mother rented me. I’ve acted as the girl’s father ever since. I am the only real father that she knows.  If the client never reveals the truth, I must continue the role indefinitely. If the daughter gets married, I have to act as a father at that wedding, and then I have to be the grandfather. So, I always ask every client, “Are you prepared to sustain this lie?” It’s the most significant problem our company has.

Family Romance also offers a wedding service, which is staged two or three times a year at a cost of ¥5,000,000. In some cases, the rental includes guests and groom.

Another company Ikemeso Takkyūbin offers a service to induce people to cry. The name of the company means “handsome men weeping delivery” or tear couriers as their first service was a ceremony that marked the end of a marriage and their female clients felt that their emotions were intensified by attractive man to wipe away the tears.

Though the topic is quite controversial as anyone can have a different opinion on it, while at someplace it can help someone emotionally, on the other hand, it can be just a business activity for a person. If emotions become real over the span of time it can be a problem in mere future.
