Sahar Shaikh Controversy Explained:Sahar Shaikh, a 22-year-old political figure from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), has become a hot topic in Maharashtra politics overnight. Being one of the youngest corporators elected to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), she is the representative of Ward 30 in the Mumbra area, which is part of Thane city. The recent elections for local governments, in which her party managed to win several seats, have ushered her in as one of the new faces of the local politics of the area.
Who is Sahar Shaikh?

Sahar comes from a politically connected family, she is the daughter of Yunus Sheikh, a long-time local political figure once closely associated with senior leader Jitendra Awhad of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction). That alliance, however, reportedly turned adversarial in recent years, adding layers of political rivalry to her own electoral journey.

‘Paint Mumbra Green’: What Was Said and Why It Went Viral?
The controversy began after Sahar delivered her victory speech following the municipal polls. In that address, she said she wanted to “paint Mumbra green” over the next five years, suggesting that in the next municipal elections all winning candidates from the area would be from AIMIM”.

That comment quickly went viral on social media and sparked sharp reactions across political circles. Critics, consisting of the ruling Mahayuti alliance and NCP (SP) leaders, among others, made their case that the statement was an open declaration of religious control over the Mumbra voters.
Clarification and AIMIM’s Stand
Sahar Shaikh, in a statement to the public, complained about the critics’ barrage and asserted that her green statement did not have any religious connotation.

She maintained that the AIMIM flag’s green color was the basis of her remark, not the desire to exclude some communities or the promotion of sectarian division. Shaikh clarified on Wednesday that her words were being deliberately misread for political mileage. “My party’s flag is green. I was referring to AIMIM’s political presence and governance agenda, not religion. If my party’s flag were saffron, I would have said saffron,” she told reporters.
Sahar further described her initial remark as pun and symbolic where the former would be a joke while the latter would be the meaning of the statement. She declared that her party was celebrating its success and the discussion about future ambitions was going on. She stressed that her politics, she said, was about development and upliftment and not about communal discord.
Political Backdrop and Reactions
The wider political environment adds to the controversy’s intensity. Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM, making the most of it, won five of the 131 seats in the Thane Municipal Corporation elections, which had been primarily dominated by other major parties, thus, marking a significant change in the political scenario. This was interpreted as a sign of AIMIM’s increasingly spreading influence beyond the traditional strongholds.
Rival leaders were quick to use Sahar’s remark as a flashpoint to critique AIMIM’s approach. Some political figures demanded clarity on whether her statement was about environmental development (“green and clean Mumbra”) or a coded attempt at communal colouring.
