Salim-Javed Split in 1982:The legendary screenwriting team Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar known to the public as Salim-Javed created a new style of Hindi cinema through their successful films Sholay Deewaar Zanjeer and Don which they produced during their decade-long partnership. The partnership established through their work created the “Angry Young Man” character who became a Bollywood star and raised screenwriters to new heights of fame.

The sudden 1982 separation between them surprised everyone within the industry. The fans continue to inquire about the actual events that took place between the two.

The duo remained together until their June 1982 separation which lasted for approximately 12 years. The moment became handled by Salim Khan as Javed Akhtar expressed his desire to end their partnership through a handshake. Recalling those early days during the trailer launch of docu-series Angry Young Men, Javed said, “We never decided that we would now start working together. We never consciously decided to work together; it just grew. It just happened.”

Salim refused to find out the reason for his departure because he thought that partnership relationships should exist without force.

Why Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar Stopped Working Together?

1. Creative Differences and Career Ambitions

The documented reason for Javed Akhtar’s departure from Salim-Javed partnership occurred because he wanted to write lyrics.

Salim Khan refused to agree with the proposal because he wanted to maintain their partnership exclusively for screenplay work. The two parties involved in the project experienced conflict because they had different visions for their work.

“Back then, Salim-Javed used to decide the casting of the films written by them,” Inder Mohan Pannu responds when questioned about the split. Both of them together wrote the film ‘Main Azaad Hoon’. Together, they told the story to a producer, and Javed Akhtar recommended Amitabh Bachchan and Shabana Azmi as the heroine. Salim Khan objected, stating that Parveen Babi or Zeenat Aman would be more appropriate for this movie and that Shabana’s image is that of the heroine in art films. The producer abandoned the notion of filming a movie after observing their mutual expression.”

2. Loss of Personal Bond After Success

The two friends spent all their waking moments together during their difficult period. The success they achieved completely transformed their existence.

Javed Akhtar described how their rising fame brought them new social groups which made him lose his special emotional bond with his wife. The loss of “mental rapport” between them made work together impossible.

3. Industry Pressures and Financial Strain

Salim-Javed achieved the status of top Indian writers during the early 1980s. Their charges increased dramatically, with their payment approaching that of major film stars.

Producers began to show reluctance toward paying such amounts, which resulted in fewer job opportunities and created additional work-related stress. The long successful period of the duo led filmmakers to believe that they had reached their creative limit.

4. Rumours About Amitabh Bachchan

The public started to believe that Amitabh Bachchan caused the breakup because he appeared in most of their major movies.

“This journey ends here,” Javed stated to Salim Khan as he got out of the car. It is reported that by that point, Javed Akhtar had spoken with producer-director Yash Chopra about writing the songs for Amitabh Bachchan’s movie “Silsila.”

Theory of Javed Akhtar related to the situation has been proven wrong because he has clearly denied it. He stayed away from working with Bachchan for several years after their split to stop people from assuming they had continued to work together.

The documentary Angry Young Men showed that Bachchan did not cause the split between the two parties because the actual reason for the split belonged to internal matters. “Main Azaad Hoon’s heroine’s casting is the main reason for the break in friendship between these two,” Mohan Pannu says.

“After the split, things changed,” Javed said. “People believed that my closeness to Amitabh was the reason behind the breakup. I didn’t want anyone to say I ended that partnership because of favoritism. So, despite getting many offers, I didn’t work with Amitabh for about 10 years. The first film we did together after that gap was Azaad.”

The breakup changed both careers dramatically:

  • Javed Akhtar became a successful lyricist and solo writer after reinventing himself from his previous work.
  • Salim Khan wrote fewer films afterward but remained a respected industry figure and mentor.

The two people who worked together professionally showed respect for each other but later developed friendly relations.
