Sands of Time Remake: Originally announced back in 2020, the remake was slated for early 2021. But delays, first pushing to March 2021, then indefinite postponements plagued the project.
In 2022, the development was handed over to Ubisoft Montreal (the same studio behind the original trilogy) after disappointing feedback about the initial visuals and overall quality.
For years, fans were left with silence or vague promises until now. As of May 2025, publisher Ubisoft officially confirmed that the remake is still in development and is slated to release before the end of its fiscal 2025–2026 year, meaning no later than March 31, 2026.
So after five years of anticipation and a complete overhaul midway 2026 finally feels like the “return of the prince” might actually happen.
What’s the Rumour: “Mid-January 2026”?
Recent reports have gone beyond “just 2026”, some suggest a more specific target: mid-January 2026.
According to those “insider sources,” this release date could become official at The Game Awards (scheduled December 11, 2025), when a new trailer and formal date announcement may drop.
If true and there are no further delays, fans who’ve been waiting half a decade will finally get their hands on the remake very soon after the new year.
Still nothing has been pinned down officially by Ubisoft yet. The mid-January date remains a “rumour,” albeit a credible and repeatedly cited one.

What We Know About Sands of Time Remake
From recent developer statements and evolving reporting, here’s a breakdown of what we believe about the remake’s state and what to expect:
Ubisoft says the project is still “deep in development.”
The remake is now being built with modern technology presumably leveraging Ubisoft Montreal’s pipeline and current-gen console capabilities.
The original development by Ubisoft’s Pune and Mumbai studios was scrapped; the shift to Montreal came with a full restart to meet quality expectations.
By the time of November 2025, a few leaks have come out: it is said that a leaked gameplay video has caused the changes to be noticed that the changes include the characters redesign and the updated mechanics.
Maybe the fans will be able to see the gameplay or the complete trailer at the next Game Awards 2025 very soon.
The potential drop of the title in January 2026 means a lot to the fans who have been with the series for a long time. The original game from 2003 is often referred to as one of the best games ever made, which had parkour-style platforming, time-manipulation mechanics, very memorable story beats, and atmospheric design. A remake could definitely be a way to reintroduce the game with the nostalgia still intact: new visuals, better controls, and perhaps even more lore.
However, there is still cause to be somewhat positive and cautious at the same time. Considering the development of the game has been very difficult, delayed several times, changed studios and directions, and there has been a long silence since then, it is possible that the final product will not be the one that people expect. The fact that there is no official date and no gameplay footage for the public makes people doubtful.
