The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notification and released funds to install sanitary napkin vending machines in its premises. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra issued the order to install three machines and released Rs 10 lakh for the installation of machines.

This comes after advocate, Nandini Gore, raised how women in the court premises, whether visiting or working, faced difficulties when they would get their periods at work. Reports say the court’s medical clinics also didn’t provide sanitary napkins.

Chief Justice Misra also released Rs 80 lakh for the Supreme Court Bar Association. According to an HT report, this amount will go into a fixed deposit while the interest will be used to provide medical assistance to lawyers.

Nandini Gore lauded the move saying there are close to 1,000 woman lawyers and interns as well as around 250 woman staff with the court registry and all of them will benefit from installation of vending machines. She also said that she would request for one machine to be installed in the chamber block outside the court complex where lawyers have their offices, and the other two in washrooms.
